European Testing Week (STI)

dépistage VIH

As every year, the medical analysis laboratory BIONEXT is participating in European Testing Week, an initiative aimed at offering free screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

This campaign will take place from November 20th to November 27th, 2023.

"One out of every five of the 2.3 million people living with HIV in Europe is currently unaware of their seropositivity, and over 50% of seropositive individuals are diagnosed late, delaying access to treatment." Source: testingweek.eu

"In Luxembourg, the reported cases of STIs (Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis) increased from 1755 in 2021 to 2171 in 2022, representing a 23.7% increase. This is mainly due to an increase in Chlamydia cases." Source: Ministry of Health

These figures are alarming.

That is why it is essential to promote prevention and facilitate early screening for HIV, as well as for hepatitis and all other sexually transmitted infections that are frequently responsible for co-infections (Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, as well as Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, and Trichomonas vaginalis).

For this screening campaign, BIONEXT services are available:

  • Without an appointment
  • Free of charge
  • Without a medical prescription

Samples can be taken:

  • In all our collection centers
  • Via our LABOMOBILE service in the morning in various municipalities and in the afternoons on the university campuses of Belval, Kirchberg, and Limpertsberg

Panel of tests offered by BIONEXT for screening all sexually transmitted infections includes:

  • Serologies: HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis
  • PCR Sexually transmitted infections: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis

  • • Tuesday, November 21 – Limpertsberg Campus parking from 1 PM to 5 PM
  • • Wednesday, November 22 – Kirchberg Campus parking from 1 PM to 5 PM
  • • Thursday, November 23, and Friday, November 24 – Belval Campus, Sciences Gate - in front of the Maison du Nombre from 1 PM to 5 PM

Results will be available in the secure MYLAB application.

The goal of our approach is to improve the existing offering to enable early screening, which is essential for effective treatment and reducing infections in case of transmission, while providing proximity and simplified procedures.

For example, France, which has offered HIV screening since 2019, voted in September 2022 to extend the free screening to all STIs for those under 26. This is also essential in Luxembourg in the face of the increase in infections observed between 2021 and 2022 (+23.7% in the number of Chlamydia trachomatis cases) and the sometimes severe complications of these diseases (infertility, ectopic pregnancy, etc.).

Luxembourg should, therefore, be able to offer year-round screening, without a prescription and free of charge in all medical analysis laboratories in the country, similar to what is already offered in other European countries like France.

Access to tests using advanced techniques, coupled with medical support, allows for more sensitive and specific screening than over-the-counter self-tests, which suffer from performance limitations.

In case of a positive result, medical support is always offered, unlike self-tests, where the patient is alone with the result.

Screening tests for sexually transmitted infections can be done year-round, in all our collection centers, with or without a prescription.

Our supplier and partner ACCURAMED is also participating in the action by offering a commercial effort throughout this week.
